Granulation with the fluidised bed system from L.B. Bohle

Fluidised bed systems have been used in the pharmaceutical industry for decades. By adding an aqueous or alcoholic granulation liquid, the mixture of primary dry powder particles is compacted. The liquid contains a volatile solvent that can be removed by drying. For a long time, the top spray process dominated fluidised bed systems. Recently, however, systems with tangential spray nozzles have increasingly demonstrated their advantages, so that the top-spray process is being replaced more and more. L.B. Bohle's range of fluidised bed granulation systems includes both R&D systems for small production quantities and systems for production scale.

With the Bohle Uni Cone BUC® process, L.B. Bohle is optimising the technology of fluidised bed processes. The patented Bohle Uni Cone BUC® is a specially slotted inflow base with a conically shaped displacement cone. This design enables complete fluidisation of the particles. The tangential particle movement ensures uniform fluidisation, e.g. of pellets, without twinning.

As the fluidised particles or granules are moved tangentially at a relatively low fluidisation height, a high expansion volume is not required. This reduces the installation height of the system. This saves costs and production space.

At least six filter elements of the BFS, which can be cleaned separately, ensure that the air flow through the product bed is not interrupted.

Drying, granulation and coating without conversions

Another advantage of L.B. Bohle's tangential design is that granulation, coating and drying can be carried out in one system without the need for any modifications.

For the drying process, the BFS fluidised bed system can be equipped with an online moisture measurement system using NIR technology (similar to infrared analysis). This guarantees precise and reproducible determination of the current moisture content during the granulation and drying process.

Facts and answers

The BFS system uses the patented Bohle Uni Cone BUC® technology, which enables complete fluidisation of the particles thanks to the slotted inflow base and displacement cone. This ensures uniform filming without twinning and eliminates the need for conversions between drying, granulating and coating.

Tangential systems require less fluidisation height and expansion volume, which reduces the installation height and space requirements of the system. This saves production space and costs, while at the same time offering more efficient and uniform particle processing.

 

The unit is equipped with an NIR humidity measurement system for precise humidity monitoring. Separately cleaned filter elements prevent air flow interruptions, while the pressure shock-resistant design up to 12 bar offers optimum conditions for containment applications.

 

Thanks to the electrically driven filter lowering, easy removal of the inflow base and integrated WIP system, the system is particularly easy to maintain and clean. The compact, space-saving design and ease of operation also ensure convenient and safe handling.
