Wet Granulation for the pharmaceutical industry

Wet Granulation

Wet Granulation is a provenprocess for the production of granulates and is used in particular in the pharmaceutical industry, but also in the production of chemicals, food and food supplements. In contrast to Dry Granulation, Wet Granulation involves the targeted addition of a liquid (aqueous or alcoholic granulation liquid). The granules must also be dried. The aim is to combine powder particles and produce stable, mouldable granules. This improves the flow properties.

In Wet Granulation, the powdery starting materials are first mixed with a granulating liquid to obtain a uniform mass. This mass is then formed into granules by sieving or shearing and then dried to achieve the desired strength and flowability. This step ensures that the end product has optimum properties for tableting or capsule filling.

Wet Granulation specifically improves the flow properties, density, compressibility and homogeneity of the powder mixture and thus makes a significant contribution to the quality and reproducibility of the end product. Wet Granulation is the preferred choice, especially in the case of poor flow properties or uneven Particle Sizes.

Advantages of wet granulators

  • Improved flow properties
  • Improved compressibility of the powder
  • Homogeneous distribution of active ingredients
  • Reduced segregation
  • Suitable for products with poor flow properties
  • higher dosing accuracy
  • reduced dust formation
  • multiple manufacturing processes*

* Fluidised bed pelletising, high shear pelletising, single pot pelletising and twin screw pelletising

Industries in which Wet Granulation is used

  • Pharmaceutical industry
  • Chemical industry
  • Food industry
  • Food supplement industry
  • Agricultural industry
  • Pet food industry

Applications of Wet Granulation beyond the pharmaceutical industry

Wet Granulation is not only an indispensable process in the pharmaceutical production of tablets, capsules and pellets, but has also proven itself in numerous other industries. Wet Granulation offers decisive advantages wherever uniform, free-flowing and compressible granules are required. It therefore also plays a central role in the processing and optimisation of powdered raw materials in the following industries:

Food & food supplement industry

Wet Granulation is used in the food and food supplement industry to produce stable, dust-free granules. This is the case with vitamins, minerals, instant drinks, protein complexes or flavourings, for example. Granulation can significantly improve dosing accuracy, solubility and storage stability.

Chemical industry

The chemical industry uses Wet Granulation when powders with defined physical properties are required. Typical applications are found in catalysts, pigments, fertilisers or additives, where a homogeneous grain structure and high Bulk Density are required.

Cosmetics industry

Wet Granulation is also used in the cosmetics industry, for example for powder products, scrubs or bath additives. Here, it ensures uniform textures, better processability and a controlled release of active ingredients or fragrances.

Agricultural and pet food industry

The process is used in the agricultural and animal feed industry to granulate vitamin and mineral mixtures or pesticides. The result is dust-free, storage-stable products that can be precisely dosed and evenly distributed.

Advantages of wet granulators from
L.B. Bohle

  • Uniform and reproducible granule structure with excellent flowability and compressibility
  • Homogeneous active ingredient distribution ensures consistent tablet quality
  • Short process times
  • Optimised use of energy and resources
  • Hygienic design for optimum Process Safety, easy cleaning and ergonomic operation
  • Reliable scale-up from laboratory to production scale
  • Precise process control through PAT (Process Analytical Technology)

Differences between Wet Granulation and Dry Granulation

In contrast to Dry Granulation, which works without liquids, Wet Granulation uses liquid to produce a homogeneous, free-flowing granulate. This results in a product with excellent compressibility, dosing accuracy and mechanical stability. The granules are therefore ideal for further processing into tablets or capsules.

L.B. Bohle offers technology-leading solutions for Wet Granulation - from classic batch production to continuous granulation. With decades of expertise, Bohle develops systems that combine the highest product quality with maximum Process Safety. Whether developing small batches or large-scale industrial production, Wet Granulation is realised efficiently, scalably and GMP-compliant with Bohle systems.
